Please enjoy this recently received letter from one of our scholarship winners:

"My name is Megan Machnik and I was one of the recipients of your scholarship program on 2002, when I graduated from Port Charlotte High School. Mr. Kraus was my private clarinet teacher throughout high school, and he recently mentioned to me that you might be interested in what I ´ve been doing recently with music.

I graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Music Performance degree in 2006 and then moved to Chicago with my husband and enrolled at the Chicago College of Performing Arts.

I studied with John Bruce Yeh, currently the Acting Principal clarinetist of the CSO, for two years until I received my Master´s degree in Clarinet Performance in 2008. My second year in graduate school, I was a teaching assistant in music history for undergraduates. Upon graduating, I taught private music lessons in the Chicago area for a year. Then, I had a wonderful opportunity to move to Brazil and learn Portuguese, and I have been residing in Rio de Janeiro for the past year and a half. While out of the country I ´ve been able to pick up saxophone, again with direction from Mr. Kraus, and now I ´m looking forward to relocating back to Chicago in the next 2 weeks and resume my music teaching.

Whew! That was a lot of moving around now that I think about it! But it was definitely thanks in part to the wonderful encouragment and support that the Charlotte Jazz Society provided me. Please don´t ever stop your scholarship program because it definitely gives kids from a small town the extra help that they need to make it out in the big world.

If there is ever any service that I can render, please let me know. And I hope to be able to support groups such as yours in the future. Thanks again!

Sincerely,

Megan Machnik"
